After studying painting at The Slade School of Art in London, Holmes began a career as an independent artist working specifically in extruded aluminium and creating sculptural pieces which challenged he classic divisions between art and design. Together with Sebastian Wrong, Holmes formed the multifaceted creative organisation "The Lane" in September 2003. Holmes working relationship with Sebastian Wrong has been pivotal in the conception of Established & Sons. As a founder member and director, Holmes exercises his skills as a designer whilst also being active in the general development and creative direction of the company.

The linear profile of the piece reveals its initial inspiration; the alphabetical letter "b". Pinch’s simple form discreetly masks a complex engineering process. The technical requirements for a successful chair design have been laboriously considered and applied to this enduring piece of furniture.
