Born in Toronto, Canada, Scott Turnbull's recent paintings use narrative as their subject matter and explore the ways in which even highly-charged or loaded imagery can be "muffled", or "muted" through the use of colour and/or decorative/abstract elements. Influenced by the strong, often abstract compositions of islamic and oriental prints, as well as narrative icons such as Hieronymus Bosch, Turnbull's wonderfully colourful paintings seek to find a home for narrative after modernism. "I want the paintings to always appear to be opened ended and undogmatic, but at the same time I dont want to deny them of their potential for charged interpretations." Turnbull exhibits an almost foolproof colour sensibility, and an impressive knack for creating ways of painting (surfaces, mark) that are beautiful and engaging without eccentricity. Scott Turnbull is a recent graduate of The Nova Scotia College of Art & Design where he received his BFA in 2005. |
