R. Justin Stewart was born in Waukesha, Winsconsin. Lives and works in New York City. "My work presents questions of what is there, what is missing, and what happens when the complex set of subtleties of contextual relationships that usually allow us to understand the world that is presented to us are minimized. Utilizing ordinary materials, such as fleece, wooden spheres, ropes and hose barbs, I create maps, systems and structures. These structures tend to be simplistic in their materials and construction techniques, yet simultaneously intricate and complex in their final manifestations. These art works are often based upon empirical data that I gather from the world, either through research into preexisting systems like transit maps, or more personal information based on my own movements. I impose a set of filters on the data which force a limited perspective of the information to guide the physical formation." (R. Justin Stewart)
