Returning to the art of drawing and painting after a huge 8 year gap, Joanna Henly (a.k.a. miss led) was incepted in May 2006 as a tentative platform and springboard to a more playful and whimsical style of expression. Disciplined in and lecturer of fine art, Joanna’s trajectory lay in developing and exploring a style that encompassed a love of print, comic strip, pop art, 80’s pattern books and the pre-raphaelite muses. Unashamedly beguiled by the human figure, sexual power, changing identities and pop culture a careful and distinctive style of contradictions was born, juxtaposing high density in line against the empty ground of primer with sometimes only an accent of colour. As a theme or perhaps thread through the artwork innocence is paired and unsettling couched with depravity or inauspicious sentiments and underlying dialogues. Working and living in East London Joanna divides her time between tutoring art and creating a catalogue of work under her new pseudonym. Awarded a business scholarship for ‘miss led’ in October 2006 in the aim of pushing the role of artist/illustrator to being a multi-disciplinary legitimately full-time profession.
