interview

artist

No Knock Room had the pleasure to have as first interviewed artist Marie Blanchard, Nantes based illustrator. So here is what we talked about!

NKR: describe yourself with 5 words.
MB: wild-dreamer-anxious-curious-in love.
NKR: when you were a child, did you want to be an artist?
MB: definitely yes!
NKR: what is the best moment of the day to create?
MB: all day (but i like the morning because i'm still in my dreams/nightmares, and the night cause i feel really intimate with the characters i create)
NKR: what kind of music do you listen to at the moment?
MB: every kind of music from alain bashung to leonard cohen, hip hop for the energy (methodman, aesop rock, el p, cannibal ox...), songwriters (obviously for the pleasure of words), folk (for everything!!!!), rock (for the transe: for exemple "swans" with the genius Michael Gira and Jarboe or "Om" for that incredible slow music from another world !)... what more.... mozart is my new passion, i put a lot of time to understand his music... now i try to...
NKR: is music a big influence on your art?
MB: A LOT. in reality, my work is the music's slave ! words are more intense when i work, every intrument or melody has another taste...maybe because my ears are very attentive at the moment...
NKR: do you have any pets?
MB: two cats.
NKR: where does this passion for drawing and painting animals come from?
MB: Drawing is a long observation.... Drawing nature is an excuse to control a frightening universe. When i draw animal, i'm making anthropomorphism, i finally try to observe humans, maybe to become reconciliated with a mankind which is far from his roots.

NKR: what's the technique you use the most, and why?
MB: the more time, i use pencils and acrylic on paper...because few tools means being free...and i love the acrylic because it's a simple material : only the final work can wake it up ! When i need a biggest picture i paint on wood panels.
NKR: where do you work on your pictures and projects?
MB: i've got a studio in my apartment
NKR: what project has given you the most satisfaction?
MB: those i'm doing from about 7 months
NKR: contemporary living artists. are there any particular ones you appreciate?
MB: camille rose-garcia, delphine coindet, virginie barré, felice varini, tatiana trouvé, matthew barney, takashi murakami, takeshi kitano (his paintings are fantastic), tanadorri yokoo, elliott erwitt, boyd webb, william wegman, m/m studio, chris cunningham + all those fantastic music album designers (so much names !) + comics (tayou matsumoto, joan sfar, dave mac kean, gradimir smudja, mike mignola)
NKR: name a few artists whose work inspired you?
MB: hans bellmer, francis bacon, jerome bosch, gustave doré, gustave courbet....and so much again...
NKR: what are you afraid of regarding the future?
MB: everything...
