"A fat little seaman doing the first thing you learn not to do at sea... and it doesn’t matter which way the wind is blowing, he’s still doing it! This is my satirical observation upon what would seem to be a fundamental characteristic of the human condition. This piece was to be the centrepiece of my recent major solo exhibition at the Regional Gallery in Townsville right up to the moment the bold and fearless burghers of our local council copped a letter of complaint from some self-appointed moral watchdog and promptly banned it from the
show. No amount of reasoning in favour of a less reactionary, more enlightened decision would reverse this arbitrary pronouncement, thereby seriously compromising my exhibition and starting a long, loud public debate in the press. Art as self-fulfilling prophecy or what...!?" (Gavin Ryan)
