Charlotte Pasternak was born in 1975 in Brussels, Belgium. After studying French literature at the Brussels University for a year, she started to study photography at l’E.N.S.A.V, La Cambre. Not very interested at commercial photography, she decides to earn money from other jobs; she opens a bar in Brussels with 5 artist friends (Café Fontainas) in order to keep freedom in their artistic evolution, and autonomy in their creative process. At the same time, she refines her look and her point of view by travelling, trying to find into the ‘here & now’ the echoes of an inner world filled by literature (from Lewis Carroll to pulp fictions), history of art (from Renaissance to ‘romans photos’), graphic design and rock’n roll. Using slides almost exclusively, she carries on her research on the fragmentation of reality, and presents her work through 2 different but complementary ways: slide projections and Cibachrome prints, each image could be seen alone or into a sequence. Her work could be related to reportage or/and diary, she tries to get rid of the general by a constant focus on the particular, framing colored shadows and fragments of stories in everyday’s life. Charlotte currently lives and works in Paris.
